When we sit down to write a song, we often get caught up in the mechanics. We chase the perfect chord progression, the catchiest hook, or maybe a clever rhyme scheme. But strip all of that away, and you are left with the absolute core of songwriting: your message.

But a great message on its own isn’t enough. You can have the most profound, intellectually brilliant message in the world, but if it only lands in the listener’s head, it fails. To truly matter, your message has to travel from the head straight to the heart. It must evoke emotion.

As songwriters, our job isn’t just to make people hear what we’re saying—it is to make them feel what we’re saying. If you are writing about hope, they should be engulfed with hope deep down in their soul.

When you connect a clear, honest message with an authentic emotion, something special happens. The listener no longer feels alone. They hear your song and think, “Someone finally understands exactly how I feel.” That is the power that GOD allows us to hold in our hands.

So, ask yourself two simple questions: What am I trying to say? And how do I make them feel just that?

Write from the scars, not just the brain. Dare to be vulnerable, because that is where the pen finds success.

The best advice I have ever received for SONGWRITING came from Gloria Gaither when she said, “First, never write a song until you have a story to tell. Don’t just write to be writing. Second, when you finish, writing the song, read through what you’ve written to make sure it follows the story you’re trying to share.” if you’re strong, does not evoke intended emotions (i.e. laugh, cry, smile, etc..) then your song is not ready. Always remember the scripture, Colossians 3:23. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart…”. Johnathan Bond
